16-19 Study Programme
The Government’s 16 to 19 study programmes are designed to provide students with structured and challenging individualised learning programmes that support their development and progression in line with their future career plans.
These study programmes are met in full at Maltby Learning Trust where students’ pathways have been developed to combine the elements below.
level 3 astudy programme
Students will study one or more academic, applied or vocational qualification that is appropriately matched to their individual needs and links clearly to training, employment or higher education.
To reflect the greater demand of the new academic and vocational specifications, the majority of students study three A Level or equivalent subjects. However, four subject pathways are available for the most able students to facilitate their career aspirations.
Pathways are monitored and revised when necessary, and as a result of this changes are sometimes made to entry
requirements. This ensures students maximise their options of progression at the end of the sixth form.
English and Mathematics GCSE
Where students have not achieved a grade 4 in English or Maths then students will re-sit these examinations and
additional time is structured into the timetable for delivery of these sessions.
Enrichment and Work Experience
Students can take part in meaningful work experience and work placements. This usually complements the individual student’s chosen career aspiration and enables them to experience and gain an insight into the world of work.
Students are able to apply their skills in real working conditions. Students who are considering a teaching career or a career in the medical profession are advised to undertake work experience as part of or in addition to the enrichment programme below.
All students take part in enrichment activities and can choose from a wide range of options. These include;
-
Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award
-
Criminology
-
Photography
-
Core Maths
-
ICT
-
Football Scholarship

Tutor time, Character Education and Careers
Students attend tutor time and are allocated a personal tutor. Students have personal tutoring to enable their
academic progress to be supported, developed and monitored. As part of the tutor programme, students take part in ‘Character Education’ which enables them to develop their resilience, organisation, initiative and develop skills in communication and leadership- useful skills for life. We invite employers, apprenticeship providers and universities in to deliver sessions with students so that they can make informed decisions about their future. In addition to this, students are provided with careers guidance, including applications for employment, apprenticeships and higher education as part of their personal development programme.
